Reporting Services 2008 Configuration issue

Today I was asked to setup SSRS on my local machine and test some outsourced code. Follow the steps if you are new to Reporting Services (as me Crying face) to setup it.

After installing it, popup the Reporting Services Configuration Manager and connect to your sql instance

Make sure to go through each of the followings: (!)

especially the DB section, otherwise you’ll get some cryptic error like this:

and of course Steaming mad

Ok let’s have a look  to the LOG in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.***\Reporting Services\LogFiles.

In the log there is a reference to a missing DSN… smell that DB is not setup, in fact

just go to the Reporting Services Configuration Manager

and setup properly the DB, you’ll see a nice

in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.***\Reporting Services\ReportServer\rsreportserver.config

and you’ll see Reporting Service running… Airplane

Much more funny

1 – Invalidate the DSN encrypted blob and you’ll get … image

(so why you don’t realize that the DSN is missing)

2 – In the configuration manager

There is no check about the DB if has been setup properly… (what about a wizard anyway has to be setup)

Good bless you SSRS Team
